Houndstooth Coffee – Walnut Hill, Dallas, Tx

Houndstooth Coffee – Walnut Hill, Dallas, Tx

IMG_0516

Hey friends,

Super stoked to talk about Houndstooth coffee! During my staycation, this place was a convenient spot to stop and take a break at. Just by taking a look at their website you’ll see this place is very popular and all over the hipster-saturated cities here in Texas, Austin and Dallas. They have 4 locations in Austin, so if you’re visiting there is no way you won’t have time to get to one of em. Here in Dallas, there are three locations, Henderson Avenue, Sylvan and Walnut Hill. Although I find Henderson Avenue being the most popular, the Walnut hill has just another character of its own that I’m really digging! The super small tree-house-like coffee shop has a swagger of its own that really attract numerous of people, despite the limited space.

For one, Houndstooth Coffee is no-joke one the most serious coffee shops in Dallas, hands down. They do not take their coffee lightly (both no pun and pun intended). They are locally brewed and their barista’s represent Houndstooth with pride by always staying on top of the coffee trends and crafting coffee in ways that many coffee shops don’t know how. They are the stylish creatives of the industry, always finding ways to make coffee a fashion statement, for lack of better words. Houndstooth is both committed to the coffee they serve and the community they serve to. Even this “almost missed by sight,” small coffee shop can curate to the biggest crowds due to their passion and I find that astonishing and admirable.

IMG_0505

Now lets get to why this place made it to my list? I mentioned the convenience of the coffee shop’s location earlier and its true that the Walnut Hill location is probably the best location to have such a small and relaxed coffee shop here in the North Dallas area. They don’t need to be in the middle of everything that is happening in Dallas in order to attract the “right” crowd. Both coffee drinkers and coffee enthusiasts get the pleasure of coming to Houndstooth Walnut Hill. Funny story, I was actually at Civil Pour before I walked into Houndstooth. I’ve been here before, might as well come again, right? But it’s more than just convenience. It’s experience.

The barista is a freakin coffee nerd, to say in the most loving way, I loved his expertise. I had a cortado with floral notes, and to be honest I didn’t have much of an idea of what that meant but,  thanks to this guy, I do now. Their coffee is super strong, its bitter in the best of ways, and it will make your pupils dilate seconds after taking the first sip. But you get those notes I’m talking about. The cortados floral note was very light, which meant to me it didn’t leave your tongue with the nasty “burnt coffee bean” after-taste that most coffees carry. No Joke. Nothing better than a coffee that can work the true magic of its purpose, huh? Even though the coffee menu looks slim and limited, you don’t need to want anything other than what the baristas recommend. And it’s okay to ask dumb questions here like, “what is that?” because they actually want to tell you.

So what if you’re not into the strong coffee or what if you’re not a coffee enthusiast but want to just capture the right picture? Well, they have this cutest sign of the word IMG_0074COFFEE that has become super popular and a signature to their location. Everyone knows where you’re at when you see this sign on Instagram. Seriously, anyone’s instagram can be transformed by a pic like that don’t you think?

I love the style of their coffee shop, although it’s very minimalistic for my personal taste. I think for the sizing of the shop, the modern and minimalistic fits perfectly. I see how clean it is, and there are details here and there that make you feel connected but not overwhelmed. The windows really make this place open and liberating, so that if you did get lucky enough to find a seat, you could feel revitalized by the sun’s brightness. They have a separate area where you can find tables to work on your own, away from the barista’s just in case they get rowdy.

My only issue with the place really is the space. Like I’ve said, I do admire that they can continue to attract the number of people they do with such a little tiny coffee house, but when it comes to feeling comfortable and productive, my personal opinion is that you won’t find any of those two here. I don’t if it was just those guys’ preferences, but they were standing… and so was I. The area where you can move away and find a table still continues to be to small, and bring out too much competition for a table that I rather not deal with. If it wasn’t too hot, I’d be outside by the benches, which at least they do have.

IMG_0504

Overall, this place is an oasis for many. Small enough to escape for a second, big enough to get the job down of being a coffee shop. There is creativity floating around and you can feel it. But most of all, their coffee carries classiness and signature tastes that are incomparable. I mean, just look at Victor’s face!

Flying Horse Cafe – Downtown, Dallas, TX

Flying Horse Cafe – Downtown, Dallas, TX

IMG_0916

I’m half way through the series guys! I legit don’t even want to let it all go all at once… FOMO.

It’s been a few days, a couple of weeks, since I actually went and explored all of these coffee shops so please don’t blame me if I can’t remember the actual date I dropped into visit. What I do remember about this really cool and down-to-earth coffee shop is that it has a flying, bright red horse that will capture your attention in seconds. The flying horse truly is, what helped me discover the FLYING HORSE COFFEE SHOP. Victor and I were initially looking for The Joule Hotel, which we have casually visited once before but could not find exact location of when we stumbled about this dime of a place. And again, by casually, I mean we went full-glam for a couple friend’s wedding! Any who…

This coffee shop is filled with a lot of history and that is what makes it Victor’s favorite. Before being converted into what is now The Magnolia Hotel, this 29-story tower serviced as the office and headquarters of the Magnolia Petroleum Co. Flying Horse Coffee is located in the Magnolia Hotel,  which is known for being the city’s first skyscraper, and the first air conditioning high-rise building in U.S. history. Drinking coffee all chillax at Dallas’ most historic and iconic hotel coffee shop? I think this calls for a celebration!

Flying Horse Coffee offers delicious pastries that are baked in-house, but also accommodate to have some of those very trendy, basic, and popular must-have snacks you usually see at Starbucks like Kind Bars. They brew coffee from all over the world but also have their own roaster in California. From time to time you might catch them with some local coffee, but for the most part, not. Pegasus is not the only cool thing about this relaxing coffee shop. They make their own in-house syrups for your specialty coffees, something that you do not want to miss. Sho right I had some of that sweet stuff in my drank!

The atmosphere of this place is super calming, relaxing, slow and down-to-earth. Although located right at the center of the city, urban living is definitely not the vibe that I received from this place. Most people who enjoy urban living always look like they are in such a hurry to get from point A to point B. Well, if you’re that person, don’t walk in here or you’ll be late to life. Their seating is simple, versatile and comfortable. They even have a TV because not all Dallasites are hipster and claim they don’t watch TV anymore. C’mon guys.

What’s really interesting about this coffee shop is the bright red wall on their right-hand side. Its big, and bright, and filled with amazing local artistry so you can’t miss it! If you guys have ever been to Jupiter House in Denton, TX (which I hope one day to be talking IMG_0919 about here in more detail) you’ll notice this place kind of has that same vibe. Local art posted in the wall with the artists information and cost of the painting or drawing, really makes me feel local and like the city cares about the creatives. I’m super mush over it.

Despise the very relax seating, the lighting I’m sure really makes this place feel urban at night time. with no doubt I believe that dimmed out, this place is definitely somewhere you can unwind, maybe watch the Cowboy’s lose over a delicious home-made vanilla iced latte, or even reflect on the day’s long adventures –perhaps if you’re not a local and are staying at The Magnolia Hotel. I think just kind of like Mokah Coffee Shop, you can truly makes this place you’re own home-away-from home and meet strangers that can truly share stories traveling all across the world. There’s probably no limit to what or who you can discover sitting here in the center of downtown.

IMG_0921Who else wants to know if the coffee was good or not?

Again, their in-house syrups (which I’ve mentioned 3 times now) are incredibly rich, very flavorful in taste. This feature truly makes this place a great competitor to all other coffee shops in Dallas. The heat was crazy, so I decided to have it easy and get a hazelnut iced latte and Victor went with the Caramel iced latte, all with Almond milk. I want to disclose that honestly, before I started blogging consistently, I drank probably only hot drinks for the most part. Again, it’s this heat, man.

I will say the downfall of always choosing the iced versus the hot coffee when trying to get a feel for the business is that the iced drink will always taste less strong when it comes to its coffee. Unless you’re getting what’s called a cold brew, you’ll have a heart time tasting the espresso shots. Here, I could the hazelnut syrup in my drink and I definitely tasted the caramel syrup in Victor’s, but for the most part the coffee was lacking the punch I’m always in search for. It didn’t give me that first-time-high I look for when trying out new coffees. That’s not a bad thing though, I’d come here time and time again, maybe even just move into one of the hotel rooms if I could because, this place is cool.

IMG_0945

It was truly a refresher to be indoors, A/C blowing in your face and looking towards all the other very tall sky-scrapers surrounding you while drinking some good ol’ cafecito. If for some odd reason you decide to be spontaneous and head to the city, which NO ONE in all Texas ever does, make sure to visit this place. Ask the barista to help you pick out what will most definitely be a stand-out-ish coffee. Go sit next to Frank (made up) who’s probably here every day during lunch and just have a chat with the guy. It’ll be a Flying-Horse kind of experience.

Amigas!!

This coffee shop is every gals dream! After I’m done talking and showing to you the beauty of this place, don’t forget to head to your nearest local apparel shop for a new outfit to visit this place. That is how cute this place is, for real.

During the staycation, I planned to stick to a few coffee shops that were already on my bucket list, but just like my day turned into an adventure, discovering this place was the same. Sift + Pour is the cutest, boutique-like coffee shop and bakery I’ve ever IMG_0848seen. From my point of view, there’s not much of a story here except that this place was designed to be photographed, tagged, and shared by others in the Dallas area who go crazy for all things pink, shiny, sweet, and iced!

They have everything from delicious and colorful macarons, to cake pops, and rice crispies. As for their pours they carry speciality coffee drinks and teas. I don’t believe it when anyone says there are girls in this world who don’t have a sweet tooth. NOPE. You’re in denial homegirl, if you think you’re better than us and don’t wanna stuff your face with a donut once in a while. *rolls eyes sarcastically*

IMG_0852IMG_0853

Remember my first post when I talked about how much a menu means to me??? Yah. Well babe this menu is the cutest I’ve ever seen, hands down. IMG_0851I love how creative the owners were to implement scrabble tiles into their menu because it truly attracts everyones attention and gives the place so much more character. Honestly, I could just read the entire menu to myself because it’s so pretty. I feel like I sound super basic but this coffee shop kind of is so… I don’t feel that ashamed.

I can name a handful of girls who would love to come and taste these delicious macarons so I might just call them up after this post is published. I tried the fruity pebble macaron and I really liked it! I wish I could have tried like 5 but… while reading the cutesy menu, did you happen to notice how expensive the small and dainty macaron is? Yeah, their prices are pretty high to me. Located in Victory Park Dallas, center of urban living, neighbors to the  American Airlines Events Center, I’m not surprised that the cost of taking very light & airy selfies here would come at a high price. I think I even used a 20%-off coupon and my drink and a macaron alone still cost me like $16… yikes!

But hheeeeeiii girl you’re young, independent, and you got Cleo app to ignore. Come splurge some money here because my #selfies are straight fire!

If you decide to visit Sift + Pour, anticipate to get no work done. It was about empty when we came to visit, but the chairs, although super cute and Instragramable, they don’t feel too comfortable. I would say come with the intentions of chit-chatting with a friend, or taking lots of pictures while munching on some delicious sifts.

IMG_0857

The coffee. Although not expertly made like Civil Pour, was still very delicious, strong and bitter like I luv it’. I’m super happy they have substitute milks, I am a big new fan of oat milk lately so I was super happy they had that option –not even all Starbucks carry oat milk yet. Ugh, they slackin‘.

Another bummer though, my coffee was kind of small. I’d say between 8-12 oz. 12 ounces to me is a small coffee, especially if you’re asking for a latte because we all know they fill your drink with a whole bunch of milk and ice. So to give you some perspective, take a look at the miniature macaron, alongside the almost-miniature latte. Then, remember.. $16. I hope you don’t thin I’m cheap… because I totally am. But… I’m just really glad that it was super delicious. Sift + Pour was totally worth my visit and my experience!!

All in all, this place is delicious and totally worth visiting, especially if you have a friend who’s on vacation and wants to explore Dallas the #blogger way. I’m definitely breaking my piggy-bank the next time I come to visit, I’ll be buying myself a dozen macarons and a “large” latte!

Mokah Coffee Shop – Deep Ellum, Dallas

Mokah Coffee Shop – Deep Ellum, Dallas

img_0528-e1559230570153.jpg

This place holds such a dear and special place in my heart. It is filled with memories in all corners of the shop. Starting with the first, Victor and mines engagement.

So cute right?

Not sure how it all played out, but that night I ended up at Mokah with the intentions to re-do my college graduation pictures. I had lost all this weight and had gained so much confidence, I had the urge to take back and re-do the memory of my graduation. Ha. Little did I know that Victor would be walking up from the side of this yellow wall to ask me to spend the rest of our lives together. It’s been 1 year and 6 months since he’s asked and its been 1 year exactly, since we got married. Now, the memories at Mokah feel so much more intimate and special. It feels so right to have had gotten proposed to in this place especially with our faith community being part of it all.

My “church” owns this place. Life in Deep Ellum is my church/faith community and we gather on Sundays in the back auditorium, right next to the Art Gallery that is also part of  LIDE (Life in Deep Ellum). Victor and I started going to LIDE 6 months after meeting each other. What a blessing it was to find out that Victor and I shared the same faith and coincidentally were both in a transition of our lives that meant we were both searching for a church to be part of. He actually found the church while searching around for local art galleries, and when I found out they had a coffee shop, I was SOLD!

Mokah has such a diverse atmosphere. Unlike some coffee shops that are trying to sell you a curated space, a vibe, a trendy lifestyle, a way of living… this place caters to everyone and understands that the people are the ones who bring meaning into the business. “Share what stirs you” is kind of their business slogan, and it goes hand in hand with their faith community slogan, “no one fits, everyone belongs”.

Mokah is the place where you are free to be creatively you. You are free to come meet a friend and share life problems, or celebrate personal milestones, over coffee. It is the place where you can pop open your laptop and invent something new or study yourself into the next level of your career. Mokah allows you to host your own business meetings, or answer your morning business calls. Heck, Mokah is the place where you get proposed to! Now that is different! All this, because they understand the ritual is not the coffee but the person, and their journey, and their purpose, and their goals and dreams, and coffee is just the commonality that holds it all together.

At Mokah, the time of day that you show up will determine the ambience. My beautiful and most talented friend Sarah Karr took our proposal/engagement photos. It all happened in the evening and the lighting was to our favor. The photographs are gorgeous! They turned out super elegant due to the dim lighting and the wallpapered walls on one side made the place look fancier then the other side which is tagged with graffiti.

IMG_0532

(look at the difference between daylight and night-time)

But the looks of this place isn’t the only thing that makes it unique. Unlike a lot of Dallas coffee shops, their seating is incredible versatile and comfortable. There are so many options and room to get comfortable at. You can sip on your coffee while you pose for Instagram on a cute old-style sofa or unwind and relax in a cute orange chair. Either way its cute and I love it. Mokah also has outside seating, bar stools and love sacs because it’s about feeling comfortable in your own home-away-from home. Up to you sis.

When it comes to the coffee, I can confidently say that I’ve had most drinks on the menu. Latte, Machiato, Cappuccino, Americano etc…. and I’ve also had most of the flavors and combination drinks they offer because I am here on Sundays right before The Gathering. So, why not, right?

IMG_0531
Photograph taken by me, Monica S Hernandez

During my staycation visit I decided to have the BomBon which is probably one of the most sweetest combination of espresso drinks out there. A bombon is a Spanish drink consisting of espresso shot over sweetened condensed milk. And no, you can’t ask for a milk substitute because almond milk doesn’t come condensed LOL. It taste like coffee mixed with a sweet chocolatey flavor. YUMMMM. I love it and usually don’t have it too often only because its one short-lived shot and I am always looking for a drink I can take my time sipping on. Especially, when I’m in for a long day filled with projects and tasks. Sorry for the lack of words to describe the taste of the BomBon, just come and taste it for yourself.

Mokah also have delicious desserts, and pour over coffees available in all styles for those who are very heavily committed coffee enthusiasts. Victor’s favorite dessert is the cinamon roll cupcake. The icing on the cupcake is literally EVERYTHING IN A BAG *made that one up myself.* This last time I was here though I had a gluten-free banana nut muffin which was as equally delicious!

I love that the strangers that you meet here can truly spark a very interesting conversation and bring some joy into your life. I’ve met and gotten to know many great people in these “four walls”. Mokah is special to me in all ways possible. I want to really encourage you to check it out the next time you’re in Deep Ellum. Just walk in and have a look at their art gallery while you’re at it, you’ll discover many local artists. Come sit in that very comfy and deep yellow couch or start a conversation with your neighbor at the bar area. Whichever you choose, try to make your own memories here. They’ll last a lifetime.

Civil Pour – Walnut Hill Ln, Dallas, TX

Civil Pour – Walnut Hill Ln, Dallas, TX

Today I want to invite you to be part of a different kind of coffee experience. To be honest, when I was on my way to check this place out, I had not much hope that I’d find good coffee here. Usually, in my experience, businesses who oversell their products are trying to hide the fact that it really kind of sucks. Is that mean? Well, I was totally wrong about that on this one. Victor even recorded the experience because that’s how good it became.

IMG_0476
They even have their own merchandise.

Civil Pour is located in the Northern side of Dallas, on 75 going north and Walnut Hill Lane. I use to live around this area and I cannot believe that I missed this place. According to the website, Civil Pour is known for perfecting things. Their coffee, beer, and panini sandwiches. They have taken their sweet, sweet time perfecting the art so that their customers receive the best of those items because they honor the ritual of having these items in our lives. For their coffee, which is always my main focus, they hand select only about 10% of the coffee they taste and test in order to curate the most delicious and creative selection. For their beer, well they do a bunch of fancy stuff to it to make it taste not so beer-y, and for their panini sandwiches, well let’s say they have travelled all over the USA looking for the best tasting Cuban sandwich and they buy the best local meats and cheeses Dallas/Texas can offer. Click here to read more details about what Civil Pour is all about.

IMG_0482
All pictures taken by me and sometimes my husband, Victor H.

My first impression of this place was “wow, why am I wearing a leather jacket?” Everyone else here was wearing a suit and tie. I was definitely dressed for the wrong party here. All except maybe a couple of men that were having a business meeting, were plugged into their headphones and seemed to be very focused on what was on their laptop screens. They were all probably “working from home” too. It definitely looks like a place that you could spend hours on your computer on, watching Netflix or working on your homework.

The shop itself is very large, spadeful and bright. There is plenty of seating and tables, and there’s nice high chairs by the huge window so that you feel enlightened and motivated to kick-ass! There’s is a cute dainty bar by the front so that you can watch IMG_0477these very knowledgeable and scientific baristas pour you a beer or some coffee. I would say the theme is modern. And judging from their customers appearance, it located in a very corporate-business sector of Dallas.

Vic and I decided to splurge a little even after seeing the prices, and yes I do mean they are pretty expensive for just coffee. The barista was very helpful, she recommended the Blueberry Pancake oat milk ice latte for me, and recommended their signature hot latte, The Warlock, for Victor. Of course, we had a sandwich to share! We decided to get their signature Cuban pork panini which is made with our Dallas, local Pecan Lodge pulled pork. (Side note, I have NEVER actually ate at Pecan Lodge, their line in Deep Ellum is legit the longest line in that area (always) but, I can say that I’ve had many and plenty of their meats because they partner with everyone around the DFW area!)

So let me get you back to the experience. But first, I would encourage you to watch the very short video my wonderful and creative husband made for this blog in particular.

WATCH VIDEO VIA YOUTUBE HERE

Wasn’t it cute 🙂

IMG_0486

Anyways. If you can’t tell by my facial expressions in the video, that sandwich was truly deliciously amazing and flavorful! The cheese melts just the way I like it (yes, I still eat cheese and I want no judgement). The meat to me wasn’t a huge deal, but it does go well with the cheese all the other condiments and spices they’ve added to make the so-called Signature Cuban. After eating my half I secretly wished I had my own. And although most of my exciting emotion was shown while unraveling that delicious Cuban, the “different kind of coffee experience” I mentioned earlier, didn’t begin until I took a sip of my own iced latte.

When the barista said it would taste like blueberry pancakes, she meant, it would literally taste like blueberry pancakes. I’m not even joking you guys. I am still craving IMG_0496 another cup of this coffee right NOW. *Crying on the inside because I wasted precious time buying Starbucks coffee while living in this side of the city instead of tasting blueberry pancakes every morning.* I tell you, please go and ask for this drink at least once this summer. I believe its a seasonal drink of theirs but maybe if everyone contributes to requesting it as much as I will, they might add it to their more permanent menu –fingers crossed. The magic doesn’t end there though.

The Warlock latte that Victor ordered, ugh. Magic sent from Heaven. When I thought that no other drink could get any better, I was wrong once more. No wonder that the Warlock is Civil Pour’s signature latte. Its freaking delicious. I have never seen Victor drink any other coffee as fast as he chugs a beer. Thankfully I took a sip and got to experience the magic myself. The only thing I will fall short of telling you today is: I cannot remember if I ordered non-dairy milk for this drink. It all just happened so fast and once it was all gone, I was sad that it was over. I wanted this moment to last forever. I wanted to be sipping on the lattes all day, all night, maybe even till the crack of dawn the next morning. But the drinks were too addicting and delicious. I had no chance against my own fast-sipping habits.

Will I ever be back? Of course! Hands down the best coffee I’ve had. Or do I say that with every coffee shop I come across? I feel confused. Seriously, maybe their anal-way of testing and selecting their coffee has truly paid off? Maybe other coffee shops don’t even stand a chance when they find out what Civil Pour has done with their business. All I know is that I’m so glad that Civil Pour exist and that I was part of an amazing coffee-drinking experience.

I love you “latte,” latte. (pun intended).

The Wild Detectives – Bishop Arts District, Oak Cliff, Dallas

The Wild Detectives – Bishop Arts District, Oak Cliff, Dallas

AHHH! Friends I am so excited because today I will be talking about my most favorite coffee shop in Dallas. Like, I actually do have a favorite, can you believe that?

This stay-at-home-vacation truly has been exactly what I needed. I’m sureyou understand exactly what I mean when I say “sometime work stinks and life is hard.” This season of my life has been moderately easy compared to part years which is of weird to compare and say, but it is how I feel. I realize that as you get older, things that use to sound like amazing opportunities and amazing life-milestones, begin to seem like chores and boring (maybe even unsatisfying) responsibilities in life you just have to get through.  Oh, wait, no? You don’t fee like that? Oops. Just me then. MY BAD.

IMG_0701
All pictures taken by me, Monica S Hernandez.

Anyway. What I’m trying to get to is that I have enjoyed being away from my full-time JOB and being able to enjoy this week with Victor 24/7. I love it.

Another thing I do love is this coffee shop I’m going to be reviewing today. My favorite. Strangely enough, one of the reasons that it is my favorite is because they aren’t just a coffee shop. Actually, they don’t even title their business as one at all. They are a bookstore-bar venue. Because so much culture, so much thought,  and so much vision has been thought-out to make this place come to life, I encourage you to read The Wild Detective’s About Me section to get a better understanding. Basically two guys decided to combine their passions for books and booze. As you can see from the pictures all around this text, the shop is filled with books, all selected by the community to initiate thoughts and ideas that people can get together and talk over some beer or a mojito.

Why do I call it a coffee shop then? Because the environment of this venue was created to do and be whatever it is that you want it to be. It is an open space that can transform itself from a chatter-room of entrepreneurs and artists into a silent and genius-working laboratory. People can choose to come and be in community with strangers or they can choose to plug their headphones in and focus on their own work, sipping coffee or beer, whichever you prefer. This is one of many other reasons why I love this place and have chosen, in the past, to drive my ass from Denton just to study here. Yes. You fellow DFW residents will understand my level of commitment as you hear me say “from Denton”.

IMG_0693

So there’s tons of books, there’s a beautiful and rustic, hipster-like bar, and plenty of seating to choose to connect or unplug. What else is there?

Delicious coffee. Because of course my mission in this series is to tell you about Dallas’ best coffee shops, I did come with the intention to drink some coffee on this occasion. The barista was able to guide me through their coffee menu and poured me a drink that I was in the mood for. She convinced me on a honey and cinnamon latte with almond milk, best for those who are looking for something sweet but don’t want the regular syrups. My favorite part about the drink is that it still had that strong kick of espresso that I desire to taste every time I have coffee. Surprisingly the drink was not overly sweet (some may differ).

The music. Unless I’m just taking a stroll down the area and have no plans to work on a current project, I usually stick to plugging my headphones into my own playlist, but the music here is very stimulating for my brain. One of the songs I downloaded to my phone while I was there this week was Plastic 100°C by Sampha which you can find if you click here. I’m not into this music typically. What I mean by that is, I don’t drive home to music that might otherwise begin to engage muscles in my body that are not the muscles in my foot that are touching the gas pedal. Music at The Wild Detectives is always great and truly stimulate me to be more creative an efficient with the projects I’m working on. It also adds another level of coolness to the venue which I find authentic and sexy.

IMG_0710

Their menu. We spoke about menus on my first post of the series (Merit Coffee – Deep Ellum, Dallas) and now you know how they speak to me about the establishment’s presentation but, this time what captured my attention is the selection. Because they aren’t just a coffee shop, their menu expands to offer breakfast & dessert, food, wine, beer, cocktails as well as hot and soft drinks. It is truly magical. In fact, my first time at WD was with Victor on date night a few years back when we came for some drinks and an event they were hosting. Oh yeah, did I mention they host community events?

Yeah this place is pretty amazing. Their level of interaction with the community and their passion for socialization and celebration is splendid. You can literally have a cup of coffee, some dessert, write a blog or two, and then stay for the evening show and have some wine! I mean literally all your money can go to but one establishment. Incredible isn’t it?

IMG_0694 Their space is very inviting and cozy. You feel zero pressure to come in looking like a million bucks because after a few drinks, you’ll be feeling like it anyway. They have tons of books to look at and read if you get bored, and they even have a cute nook-reading area which is very Instagramable. Their Wi-Fi is completely free and they have a very strict rule about shutting off their Wi-Fi after 6 PM on weekdays and weekend nights. Again, they want to create an environment where people will feel free and welcomed to share ideas with one another without being in any distracted.

There is so much I could continue to say about this place, and even then I might repeat myself a few times in the process because I just cannot get enough. I’m really glad that I now live just a couple of minutes away and with MBA school starting in the fall, I have even more reason to come and hang out. If you’re not just reading my blogs but also intend to visit some of the locations that I’m writing you about, I urge you to come check it out for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Bring your friends along because it’s not just about the coffee, it’s about the community.

Merit Coffee – Deep Ellum, Dallas

Merit Coffee – Deep Ellum, Dallas

Friends! I’m so excited to kick this series off and talk about my most favorite thing of all, coffee! Truly, this stay-at-home-vacation has  really given me more time to breath and enjoy the amazing local businesses that surround me in this beautiful city. I like to personally tell people that I was not born and raised in Dallas, but I would choose to live here over and over again if I had to. For my friends and family who are from Houston, I’m sure we have great things to see there but one of the best things about Dallas is the short distance between one adventure and the next.

IMG_0558
All photos taken by me and sometimes Victor H, my husband.

Let’s start!

This past Sunday Victor and I found Merit Coffee right on Main Street across from Viddorra, Dallas. From what I have learned from their website Merit Coffee is local. The founders opened up their first coffee shop in San Antonio, Texas and now they roast their own coffee there too. Most of their coffee beans comes from Columbia, Peru, Ethiopia, and Mexico being one of the newer coffee partners. Here’s another coffee shop trying to put their stamp on improving the coffee-drinking experience.

So now lets get into the nitty gritty. The way the coffee shop looks from the outside is beautiful and pleasing to the eye. It is what all Dallas residents look for when they want to sip on some coffee because we like to drink fancy coffee oookkayy. Because this coffee shop is New & Hot, I expected a lot of people to be in there. I was right.

IMG_0374Place is super white, the walls I mean, and the huge window facing the inside of the coffee shops really gives the ambience a Soft & Airy type-feel. I’m not big with interior design terminology but I would say it is definitely mid-century modern with a tiny hint of modern boho.

My first impression after “wow there’s a lot of people in here!” Was, “This place is super cute.” Honestly the white walls and the open window really give the space clarity and it enlarges the space even mores than what it already is. There is lots of cute plants way up high and also way down below.

The menu always is the coffee shops first invitation to be part of something bigger than just a cup of coffee. The style of the menu, the wording, the items on it, will be the gateway into what they are truly selling. Are they simple, dry, and to the point with their names? Sometimes that is always good because not everyone who walks into a coffee shop is a coffee-bean-expert. Although, there are instances that the distinct naming of IMG_0375their drinks really gives character to the establishment as well as serves as a marketing technique to sell some of their “best-known-for” items. Merit Coffee has a very simple menu. Most people into midcentury and bohemian design are cut-to-the-chase and minimalistic (I assume), so this menu was definitely that. I’m the type of gal who wants to only glance at a menu at times to see what really stands out in the first few seconds. If I’m not already up at the front of the ordering line, I’ll definitely take a hard-copy of it and contemplate my options a little longer because I want the best experience. Today, I choose to glance and what stood out was the adffogato, so I had that.

After taking the number of selfies, and coffee portraits that I occasionally take before IMG_0399actually enjoying anything in life, I decided to sip on the adffogato before eating it as an ice cream dessert. The reason I did this is because since I didn’t get a full coffee drink, I wanted to get a hint of what their coffee does taste like. Well, let me tell you. I’ve had a better affogato, but this was not the worst at all.  The coffee in it was not the strongest that I could have hoped for, considering that adffogato’s come with a shot of espresso. I would have liked it to have a more bitter or stronger taste to it. That is what makes an adffogato what it is. The ice cream is supposed to give it a more cold, sweet flavor to balance out, but this adffogato really just tasted like normal drip coffee with some Blue Bell ice cream (again I mean no harm… hopefully). In conclusion, the adffogato was nothing special but I wouldn’t eliminate the establishments from my bookmarks  just for it.

Wish I could say more, and I know that this review doesn’t give it justice. The place is beautiful, filled with light and positive energy. Next time, because there will a next time, I’ll to try a slow-pour coffee instead so that I can really get a feel of how good their coffee is. They also have pastries, and some looked like they could be vegan, so I’m definitely up for a snack.

As far as the vibe of the place. Because it’s so new, so many people crowded into one room really didn’t feel like the best place to just pop my computer open and start blogging. Although there is a lot of seating which creates this really cool Zig-Zag design, there is not much table space that can be occupied or even shared amongst your fellow coffee-shop neighbor. Chairs are very comfy but the space between them are slim. Maybe the designer wanted to intentionally spark conversations between strangers here and that is why everyones butt cheeks can potentially be touching each other.

IMG_0376IMG_0377

There is Wi-Fi! Which, I did not use, but saw many computers plugged into it. Many personal and intimate conversations were happening amongst the groups of people as well, and even though it was about 90 degrees outside and the shop was almost to full capacity, there was still a cool breeze that didn’t make drinking hot coffee uncomfortable.

Ugh, maybe this post was longer than you hoped for. This is my first review and I am a little too excited, so be kind this time. Below is the summary of what I truly enjoyed about this place and what things I didn’t find so tolerable.

2erVvfufT0WgwlG+IqRsXQ

Pros:

  • Aesthetic
  • Menu was understandable
  • People were super friendly
  • Cool environment
  • Love the Coffee Lab feature – gives the owners some purpose and intention
  • Theres self-serve water
  • Wifi
  • Sparks conversation

Cons:

  • Coffee was good, adffogato could be better.
  • Not enough personal space
  • Crowdedness will lead to no work/school productivity

Because it is Hot & New, be expecting a lot of people for the next few weeks and note that because it is in such a popular location, the New & Hot excitement might even last a few months.

Staycation Series: 10 Dallas coffee shops in a week.

Staycation Series: 10 Dallas coffee shops in a week.

Sup! and

Good evening,

51C76B39-C857-415F-B492-427F8BDAC5BB

I realized just recently that my tagline can say so much about my blog without even having to write a single post. When I first started blogging (really not too long ago but you know what I mean) I didn’t think much of what my tagline had to say about my site. I found it very inspirational that I was able to say “former meat eater finding ways to honor my body as the Temple of God” but then I realized along this blogging-process, that I have written very little, if nothing at all, about how I am a former meat eater. My husband brought to my attention last night that my tagline also states “all while looking for the next stop to drip my coffee”. This area of my life is genuinely true. I am authentically and passionately always looking for a new place I can have coffee at. I’m not a drug user, but some would argue that I am addicted.

I’m on a twelve-day vacation which I desperately needed. Unlike a lot of bloggers that I follow and admire, I am not a full-time blogger. That isn’t by choice by the way. I work a regular, full-time, 8-5 job Monday through Friday, and I binge-drink coffee, amongst other stuff, during the weekends mostly. Actually I take that back. I drink coffee every day, but I don’t blog every day, is what I mean. Who has time to blog during the week??? Welp. This is my opportunity because Vic and I decided to make zero traveling plans this time around. He suggested we try to experience a more low-key, relaxed time off from work by being tourists of our own city.

This means:

  1. I finally updated my tagline because lets face it, my dream isn’t to write about how I don’t eat meat. My dream is to write myself into my own happiness.
  2. When people have asked “what’s your dream date?” I’ve said certain things, but when people have asked “what is your dream staycation?” I’ve said “coffee.”

Dallas-based blogger firmly believing that I can write my way into my own future all while looking for the next stop to drip my coffee.

As I am writing this I’ve realized that realistically I can only go to about 10 coffee shops this week. As much as I love coffee, I don’t think I could physically spend an entire day drinking coffee just so that I can tell you how it went. It would just go bad. BUT I’m going to try! For the longest I have saved and bookmarked all the coffee shops I’ve either slowly tried, or have wanted to and just haven’t had enough time, in the last 5 years of living in Dallas, to do so. So here’s to a challenge that will truly spark joy in me and hopefully it will spark interest in you.

IMG_0183

My hope for this so called series in my blog is to be able to connect with fellow coffee lovers, especially here in Dallas, and really guide them to the best coffee that this town has to offer. I want you to see all the words I can come up with talking only about coffee. Coffee coffee coffee. Yup. And if you don’t drink coffee, still read. I’ll give you insights on the shops that I visit as well. Are they the type of coffee shop that will allow your brain to fit an entire semester’s worth of notes in one night? Or will they force you to plug your headphones in? Do they offer delicious “treat-yo-self” parties? Or maybe they will have you participate on a “diet-while-you’re-here” green-smoothie party? I’m really excited about this friends, and I hope you are too. For now, just start sharing and tell all your friends I’m coming for that coffee!

S1:E8 Trader Joe’s Organic and Gluten-Free Pumpkin Spice Granola Bark

S1:E8 Trader Joe’s Organic and Gluten-Free Pumpkin Spice Granola Bark

barks

Better late than never, Donkey from Shrek, always says.

Hey y’all!

Is anyone else experiencing as much rain as me right now? No worries, when you read this I’ll be sitting under a Palapa with a delicious Marg or sangria, enjoying Cancun’s beachy view (except my vacation ended, and I’m sitting at my boring ol’desk-job). So enjoy the weather Dallas, *mischievous laughter in the background*

If it’s rainy, and gloomy, and you’ve been doing “at-home workouts” because the weather has you wanting to Netflix and chill all day, then this snack is for you. I stumbled upon this blessing the other day while I was doing my weekly grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s (I’m kidding, I don’t buy groceries at Joe’s because I can’t afford it). But I decided to splurge a bit on these because they reminded me of the oh-so trendy brand Bark Thins.

If you had Bark Thins before, you will know they are delicious and a bit addicting. Especially if you’re a fan of chocolate. Trader Joe’s has this limited edition, gluten-free, organic, Pumpkin Spice Granola bark. They are made with 66% cacao dark chocolate and they even have toasted pumpkin seeds. Girl-say-whaaaa …The words pumpkin, granola, gluten-free, and seeds all rattling around in my head.

In my opinion, I feel like Trader Joe’s isn’t as price-friendly as they advertise. But I’m also a recent college graduate waiting to win the lottery. Just sayin’. Nonetheless, they state they bargain with retailers to get you the best prices, and whether that is true or not, doesn’t matter because they honestly have hands-down some of the best products in stock. Like this granola bark, which surprisingly Bark Thins has not come out with yet. And yes, they have the “pumpkin seed” bark but honestly it taste like chocolate with nuts in it. Nothing different from the other six products they’ve come up with. But I’ll just be here sipping my tea, minding my own business like Kermit the Frog.

Why are these so different? Because they have the word SPICE written on the front of the packaging and because when you bite into it the granola lives up to the expectation. Some of the spice ingredients Trader Joe’s used are nutmeg, Organic Ginger, Organic Cinnamon, Clove and Sea Salt. It also has a hint of Vanilla extract that makes the cacao taste I would use, “less dark”. Very typical but unique because not enough people have experimented Pumpkin Spice with granola yet. It’s honestly really creative. The layers of crunchy and chocolaty are delicious and different from what I’ve tasted thus far.

When I ran my 5K last year, and won first place by the way, I had some Bark Thins as a treats after the race. I’m no nutritionist so I can’t tell you if this was the best choice but nonetheless it was the choice I made. So go to Trader Joe’s this weekend and have some Pumpkin Spice Granola Bark after the 6 mile run you promised yourself you’d run. You’re body doesn’t deserve it but your soul sure does.

S1:E7 Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies

S1:E7 Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies

cheecake cookies

Hello friends,

I have literally been hiding this post for 3 weeks now. Oops!

I’m shamelessly excited to announce my non-healthy All Things Pumpkin Spice item for this seasons post. Don’t judge me. All the ingredients in this bag are designed to cause death. But looking at the silver lining – they are soft baked pumpkin cheesecake cookies! Isn’t that like the best pro in the world? Cookies. Cheesecake. Soft baked.

Unlike all my other post so far, I will not be talking about the great environmental and or healthy initiatives that Pepperidge Farm bring into the world. For no reason in particular. But let’s just skip that talk for today. Although, I feel like I don’t have to mention the long legacy of their delicious crackers, cookies and pastries. Like c’mon, its Pepperidge for goodness sake! I would also like to add that I would have never actually pick these gems up if it wasn’t for one of my coworkers who actually bought them for me while I was sick. She’s a queen.

Usually when it comes to sweets and desserts, I’m open to pretty much all the options. Although they say sugar is our worst enemy, I do feel like a piece of meat can kill you as fast as a slice of cake. But that’s a conversation for another time. So, I pick my own poison and today I chose the Pumpkin Cheesecake cookies. If you’re really on a fitness journey and feel like you can’t try these. Please don’t. Because they are so soft you can’t just have one. You have to have like. 1.5 At LEAST. In my case, 3 is about right. Following a 5 mile guilt run. LOL. No but seriously, they are super soft and that is what really make them delicious because even though they are prepackaged and sitting in the aisles of grocery stores for weeks before digestion, they don’t get stale or crunchy. It’s difficult to find soft baked cookies that aren’t freshly baked out of the oven.

If you aren’t a lover of cheesecake then don’t worry. The only cheesecake part of the cookie are the little dots, “chips” which can easily just be picked out by all of you ungrateful, anti-foodie souls. The pumpkin and spice flavor in the cookie can get lost in because of those pieces but they aren’t strong enough to overpower and take over the pastry. My recommendation would be to eat the cookie alongside a glass of non-dairy milk like almond, soy or even a cup of coffee. Hot cocoa would do, even. The soft texture really makes you want to dip that cookie into your glass, nom-nom-nom.

Overall, these special edition would fit in great and become really popular at a Halloween bash or Thanksgiving potluck. You might even need to buy two packages because like I said before, you can’t just have one. The link is below to go snag one or two from the Wal-Mart or HEB near you. If you decide to try them, please comment below your thoughts and opinions because I am always curious to know who shares the same taste buds as I do, or not.
